Opening Night

As the title of the Exhibition suggests, most of the work displayed is inspired by the artists’ direct observation of their environment, the immediate as well as the wider.

Landscape painting, now a venerable tradition in western art, dates back some three thousand years to Egyptian tomb painting; the depiction of interior architectural space, if mainly as a background to a more central human drama, can be found in Roman wall paintings, acquires growing significance in late Gothic and Renaissance Art, becomes a dominant theme in the works of 17th century Dutch painters like Vermeer and continues to be explored in contemporary art as the work of Bonnard, Hopper and many more demonstrates.

It is not surprising that in the Caribbean, where climate and architecture permit easy visual movement from inside to outside, that much of the art is based on the direct response to surrounding light.

In Trinidad and Tobago, Boscoe Holder, Lisa O’Connor, James Boodhoo, Irenee Shaw, Sarah Beckett and many others are known for their work inspired by the direct observation of their physical environment.

In this Exhibition, Sundiata emphasizes the use of natural light as it influences woods and expressions; Karen de Verteuil, using motifs from her studio and nearby country area, continues to explore her interest in light, form and negative space. She states that the experience of painting with Hinkson and Sundiata has been very fulfilling and that she has enjoyed the challenge of working from their ‘space’ and Hinkson says ‘I have only to look around me to find the shapes, tones and light that I need to create works’.
