PRELUDES II
Laventille Here, Laventille There,
Laventille Everywhere
This Exhibition of paintings and drawings feature the dexterity of Master Artist LeRoy Clarke, whose present series of work captures the spirit of Laventille through landscapes, architecture, music as well as images that mirrors such communities across the Diaspora.
Born in Gonzales on the November 7, 1938, Clarke, a self-taught artist, nurtured his prowess from a compulsion to see and go deeper than surfaces allowed, thus using his life experiences to shape the worldview he champions today.
On the threshold of celebrating his 70th birthday, this Exhibition serves as an introduction to his major works (large canvases) which will feature later this year, along with a 3-day symposium on his life and work.
A proficient writer he has contributed many essays on issues of national importance and is the author and publisher of four books of poems: TASTE OF ENDLESS FRUIT (1972); DOUENS (1976); EYEING DE WORD -Love Poems for Ettylene (2004) and the Cinderella edition of DE DISTANCE IS HERE, The El Tucuche Poems 1984-2007, (2007). Clarke is in the process of producing yet another publication, this time, a chronicle of his drawings (pen and ink) from the 1960 to 2008.
Today, as both painter and writer he is hailed by some who have followed his work, now 43 years in the
making, as the region’s first epic Poet! Fearlessly unorthodox, he continues to be serious about the role art plays in the critical aspects of developing a society and about “His Calling” to be a “Pointer man, pointing the way to O-be-ah-man-ness!”
