MEDIA RELEASE

SARAH BECKETT AT IN2ART

˜Painting, poetry – all acts of creation emerge, map-less and mysterious, out of the dream.  We work in the dark – and when the work is done – suddenly a moment of surprise, ˜Oh, how did I do that?"

Sarah Beckett's 2009 exhibition, titled " MANGO SONNETS ,THE PAINTINGS", opens at In2Art, their Aldegonda Park Gallery, 7 St. Ann's Road, St. Ann's, on Wednesday November 18, 2009.

Sarah left for Spain very shortly after her 2008 exhibition and has only just returned.  About the body of work in the exhibition, the artist states:

˜I went to Spain, thinking I would do Spanishy paintings – but my Muse had different ideas.  There, surrrounded by well behaved hills, ancient fields, aromas of garlic, wild flowers and coffee, my imagination overflowed with imagery of Trinidad.  Why this is so I cannot explain.  The paintings and the poetry errupted together in a kind of marriage of colour and words.

Poetry is a gossamer bridge that hovers like a rainbow between the known and the guessed at.   Painting is mute, via our eyes it must call to our inarticulate hearts through form and colour.

In this collection of work, the paintings are free, flying like kites into abstraction and yet they remained connected to the clues of our work through the poetry.

Sarah Beckett began her painting life in Trinidad in the late sixties and has exhibited extensively, not only in Trinidad but also in Europe, the USA and the Far East. She has directed ˜Alabaster Moon" an educative documentary film that was premiered at the 2008 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, and made an art film ˜An Angel's Wing" which was showcased in Trinidad, Guyana and London.

In 2006, as part of a Trinidad Quartet Productions initiative, she designed an Educative Creative Outreach (ECO) programme for NGOs in Trinidad & Tobago, which won a bpTT Soca Award for The Cotton Tree Foundation, Port of Spain, Trinidad.

In the UK in the 90s she produced plays and multi art events for The Engine Room, a Studio Theatre Workshop, in collaboration with Hilary Drake actress, and the late George Byatt, playwright and founder of Theatre Pkf.  Beckett has also designed for bands in the Not'ting Hill Gate Carnival, taught Fine Art at UWI, Trinidad, and directed the bpTT funded Educative Creative Outreach programme for The Cotton Tree Foundation.

The Sara Beckett exhibition at In2Art opens to the public on Wednesday November 18 and closes on Saturday November 28, 2009.  Images of all the original works of art in the exhibition as well the Sara's biography and artist statement could be viewed on In2Art's website, http:// in2artltd.com, from the opening day.
