PAT BISHOP

Pat Bishop (b. 1942) taught at the Jamaica Art School after leaving Durham University in England.  She returned to Trinidad in the late 1960’s.  By the end of the 1970’s, she had painted three major series: Chess Pieces (1970), Punching Bag (1972) and Liberated Women (1973-1974).  Grenada, her 1983 triptych, expressed her concern at the events during and after the political coup in that island.  Pan Rising, a tribute to the steel band movement, was shown at the Caribbean Art Now in London in 1986.  Her style is non-objective.  After heart surgery in the early 1990s, Bishop painted miniatures and small canvases for annual exhibitions.  Bishop is also a gifted musician, working with steelbands in the Carnival season, and through the rest of the year with the hundred voice choir , the Lydian Singers.
